The real weight of the Nile crocodile's toll falls, day after uncounted day, on rural people doing necessary things, and almost none of those deaths carries a name anybody outside the village would know. No record, either. But one thread in the wider record deserves pulling on its own, because it runs against the grain of nearly everything else in this book.
