Visiting Crocodile Country

A traveller’s guide across the range, from the Top End to the Sundarbans

Kakadu at golden hour. Every billabong a maybe.
Kakadu at golden hour. Every billabong a maybe.

You can travel a long way to stand near wild crocodiles. The Top End of Australia. The Sundarbans that India and Bangladesh share. The Kinabatangan in Borneo, the Sepik in Papua New Guinea, the wetland parks of Sri Lanka, the rivers and islands of the Philippines. It is some of the best wildlife travel on earth, and you can do all of it safely. But the thing that keeps you safe is not the same in each place. Far from it. The way you behave near the water travels with you everywhere. The signs, the rangers, the licensed tour boats do not.

That gap is the whole chapter. In one place a painted sign and a fenced platform show you exactly where the line is. Clear as day. In the next there is no sign, no ranger to call, and a guide who grew up on that river is the only warning you will get. So learn what a visitor actually finds in each place, and never assume the last one prepared you for the next. Start at the most organised end of the range, because it shows you what good looks like.

Australia’s Top End, worked in full

Kakadu National Park is one of the great wild places on earth: nearly twenty thousand square kilometres of floodplains, escarpment, monsoon forest and ancient rock art, jointly managed with its Aboriginal traditional owners. It is also serious crocodile country, top to bottom. The same is true of the wider Top End: Litchfield, Nitmiluk, the Mary River region, the Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land. Visiting safely is entirely achievable, and millions do it. It works because the whole country is built to keep you alive, and because visitors arrive already knowing the rules instead of learning them the hard way.
